UN Probe Finds Israeli Tank Responsible for Peacekeeper’s Death in Lebanon
Analysis of the impact site and recovered fragments showed that the round was a 120mm main tank projectile fired from an Israeli Merkava tank from the east, in the direction of Ett Taibe, according to UNIFIL.
The UN mission noted that it had shared the coordinates of all its positions and facilities with the Israeli military on March 6 and again on March 22, weeks before the strike, in an effort to minimize risks to its personnel.
The fatal incident occurred on the night of March 29 when the projectile struck a UNIFIL position near Adchit Al Qusayr. A second peacekeeper was critically injured in the attack. At the time, the origin of the projectile was unknown, prompting UNIFIL to launch an investigation.
In its initial statement, the mission emphasized that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Lebanon War, and could potentially amount to war crimes.
