Google Introduces AI Age Detection for Canadian Users
"While some would like a system that imposes a universal arbiter of age, we believe that liability and responsibility rest with every service owner — the developer, the publisher, the app creator — because they know their users and services best," Jeanette Patell, Google's director of government affairs and public policy in Canada, wrote in a company blog post.
The system has been designed with privacy considerations in mind, according to Google. Rather than gathering additional personal information, its algorithms will examine signals already associated with an account, including past Google Search activity and YouTube viewing behavior, to estimate whether the user is younger than 18.
Accounts classified as belonging to minors will automatically receive several protections. These include turning off Google Maps Timeline, removing personalized advertising, limiting access to adult-rated applications and downloads on Google Play, and introducing automatic break reminders on YouTube.
Users who believe they have been incorrectly identified as minors will be able to challenge the classification. Google will allow them to verify their age by submitting either a selfie or a government-issued photo ID.
