Microsoft Sets Human Oversight Rules for Future AI Systems
The proposed framework, known as the Humanist AI Code of Conduct, sets out a series of principles and operational limits intended to shape the development of the company’s next-generation AI systems.
A central element of the proposal is the preservation of human authority over automated technologies. Microsoft states that AI systems should not be developed in ways that allow them to operate beyond established oversight mechanisms.
The draft also rules out efforts to create unrestricted superintelligence capable of escaping human supervision. Instead, future systems are expected to stop operating rather than violate the boundaries and safeguards established for them.
Under the proposed standards, AI models must not attempt to prevent human intervention or override decisions to correct, interrupt or shut them down. They are also expected to immediately comply when instructed to pause, change direction, cancel an action or cease operating.
Microsoft opens a six-week consultation period to collect feedback from ethicists, researchers, policymakers and members of the public. The company intends to review the responses and make changes to the framework later in the year.
Once finalized, the policy is expected to serve as a foundation for Microsoft’s approach to developing and governing AI models from 2027 onward.
