Canada, US Seek Mutually Beneficial Trade Agreement
Speaking in an interview ahead of Canada’s first national investment summit in Toronto, Carney says negotiations can move forward as long as any agreement respects both countries’ sovereignty and protects Canada’s cultural institutions.
"We're ready to sit down and negotiate that and move it forward. So I welcome the president's comments," he says when asked about Trump’s latest comments on a potential deal.
Carney says Canada is not focused on determining which side should initiate the next step, emphasizing that national pride is not driving the dispute.
"There's not a pride thing in it," he says, stressing that Ottawa has clearly defined "bottom lines" and "red lines" concerning sovereignty, cultural interests and its freedom to establish trade agreements with other countries.
"We are on a path to double our trade access to 3 billion consumers around the world. We are not going to slow down on that," he says.
Carney reiterates that Canada remains prepared to negotiate with the United States while protecting these priorities. He adds that recent developments may have helped American officials gain a better understanding of Ottawa’s position.
