Infantino Backs More FIFA Cash for Members From USD6B Reserves

(MENAFN) Gianni Infantino has thrown his weight behind sending more money to FIFA's member associations from the governing body's $6 billion in reserves, media reported Monday.

According to the report, Infantino told the presidents of FIFA's six continental confederations that the FIFA Council would weigh funding proposals at its Oct. 15 meeting.

The shift comes after public pressure from UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, Concacaf President Victor Montagliani and Asian Football Confederation President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, all of whom pushed for more funding.

“I will not prejudge the amount,” Infantino said.

“I will support the greatest level of additional funding that can responsibly be delivered through FIFA’s proper governance process, applied fairly and supported by transparent and auditable arrangements.”

On Sept. 18, Ceferin and Montagliani called for a one-off release from reserves that would give each of FIFA's 211 member associations at least $10 million across the 2027-30 cycle. That money would come on top of existing FIFA Forward funding.

Infantino has directed FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom to merge the proposals into one assessment before the Oct. 15 session. He also asked Ceferin, Montagliani and Shaikh Salman to supply financial models, assumptions and supporting information.

“A single figure can begin the discussion, but it cannot complete a global policy,” Infantino said.

“The recent commercial proposal, now withdrawn, was intended to enable FIFA to invest more in football — not to replace support that could responsibly be provided from existing resources,” he added.

That withdrawn plan, the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, drew fierce resistance. It would have sold up to a 20% stake in a company controlling commercial rights to the World Cup and other FIFA competitions before being abandoned.

Last week, Infantino reportedly wrote to FIFA Council members and the presidents of all 211 member associations, signaling his willingness to discuss reform at the sport's governing body.

Infantino is currently the only declared candidate in next year's FIFA presidential election. Other hopefuls have until Nov. 18 to enter the race.
