AI Panic Grows: Most Americans Back Strict Safety Limits

(MENAFN) Nearly three in four Americans fear that future artificial intelligence systems could endanger human survival, a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday found.

Overall, 73% of US adults said they are either “very concerned” (38%) or “somewhat concerned” (35%) about the possibility, while 25% said they are not concerned.

The survey also revealed overwhelming appetite for oversight. A full 86% of respondents support requiring AI companies to meet independent safety standards, even if doing so slows the technology's development.

Public trust in the industry's leadership is thin. Some 74% of respondents said they have little or no trust in AI company leaders, and 53% said AI would do more harm than good in their day-to-day lives.

The Quinnipiac University poll surveyed 1,202 US adults nationwide from Sept. 24-27 and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
