Trump Cites Unverified Tale of Plumber Saving Flydubai Jet

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump on Wednesday relayed a dramatic, unconfirmed account of a cockpit attack aboard a Flydubai passenger jet, saying he had discussed the episode in depth with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump suggested the co-pilot may have been either a terrorist or someone acting irrationally.

Asked about the incident at the White House, Trump told reporters: “I think it’s an incredible story.”

The flight was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, and Netanyahu briefed him on what unfolded onboard, Trump said.

“I did speak to Bibi Netanyahu at length about this event,” he said. “And it seems as though the co-pilot was perhaps a terrorist, or perhaps a whack-job, and he stabbed the pilot.”

According to the version Trump said he received from Netanyahu, an Israeli plumber with no flying experience heard a commotion in the cockpit and stepped in. The passenger realized something was badly wrong after hearing screaming and seeing events on the flight deck, Trump said.

“Having never flown a plane, he took the stick, lifted it up, and leveled out the plane before it crashed,” he said.

Trump conceded he could not independently verify any of it.

“Now this is the story that I heard. I don’t know if it’s true, but that’s the story that I got from BB,” he said, referring to Netanyahu.

Trump also passed along Netanyahu's explanation for how the plumber knew what to do.

“When asked why he did that, he said, ‘He watches that show Air Disasters,’” Trump said.

Trump called the program “the craziest show” and said Netanyahu told him the passenger watched it often and picked up “sort of how to fly.”

His remarks followed reports of a confrontation between the pilots of a passenger jet flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to those reports, the incident set off a hijacking code before the aircraft ultimately landed in Saudi Arabia.

Flydubai said the circumstances and motives behind the altercation remain unknown and are the subject of a formal investigation.
