Spain Sets Early Election Amid Housing Dispute

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced Monday that Spain will hold an early election on Nov. 29 after lawmakers rejected two government housing measures, as public frustration over the country’s housing problems continues to grow.

Speaking from his official residence in Madrid, Sanchez said he would gather his Cabinet later in the day to start the formal process for calling the vote.

He admitted that his government had made mistakes and failed to accomplish all of its intended goals, saying a stronger majority in parliament was necessary to advance its agenda.

Sanchez also pointed to housing, inequality and public services as issues that still require attention, while urging voters to renew their support for his coalition so it can continue implementing its reforms.

The decision followed the government’s defeat Friday, when parliament voted against two housing decrees introduced after protests erupted over the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid residence.

Junts, the Catalan separatist party, voted against both measures alongside the conservative Popular Party and far-right Vox, despite negotiations between Junts and the government over elements of the proposals.

Large demonstrations took place in cities across Spain during the weekend, with protesters calling for stronger action to address housing difficulties. In Madrid, demonstrators also remained camped in Puerta del Sol.

Sanchez portrayed the upcoming vote as a decision between maintaining his coalition’s progressive reform agenda and a political shift toward the far right that he said could reverse existing rights.
